RUG CARE &
CLEANING GUIDE

Handmade products cleaning guide

Crafted with exquisite materials and expert craftsmanship, our rugs are a testament to quality and durability.

With proper care and meticulous cleaning, these rugs have the potential to endure a lifetime. Invest in the longevity of your rug by following recommended care instructions to ensure its continued beauty and resilience.

VACUMMING

Regularly vacuuming your area rugs is essential for maintaining their appearance and extending their lifespan. To effectively eliminate everyday dirt and dust, it is recommended to vacuum at least once a week. If your carpet is situated in a high-traffic area, consider increasing the frequency to twice a week.

When vacuuming your rug, opt for a suction vacuum rather than one equipped with a beater bar brush. Avoid using hard brushes, as they can damage the rug fibers. To prevent matting, vacuum in both directions of the traffic pattern.

When your rug or carpet is first installed, you may notice an accumulation of fuzziness on the surface from vacuuming. This is perfectly normal and will not shorten the life of your rug. It is merely the result of loose fibers created during the weaving process.

STAIN REMOVAL

In the event of a spot or stain on your area rug, swift action is crucial. If there are solids, promptly scoop them up, and for liquids, blot them immediately after the spill occurs. Use a clean white cloth or paper towel to absorb as much liquid as possible without scrubbing, as this helps prevent matting or fuzzing of the rug fibres.

In cases of spills or stains, it's advisable to get in touch with a professional specializing in handmade rug cleaning without delay. Their expertise ensures proper care and effective removal of stains, preserving the integrity and appearance of your rug.

SPOT CLEANING

Spot clean by hand with a clean cloth towel and mild wool-only detergent (pH range of 5-9), which won’t leave a residue. Add only minimal moisture to the area. Pouring large amounts of water can spread the stain and cause a larger halo effect. Also, do not pour wine or salt water onto the stain. Salt can cause the leaching of colour from a rug. When performing spot cleaning, blot the affected areas. Rubbing can cause fibre damage. Immediate attention to spills and spots will give the best results.

     PROFESSIONAL CLEANING

If you have any major spills or stains, seek professional cleaners immediately. For regular maintenance, it is recommended to clean your rug every 2–5 years, depending on use. Do not steam clean. A reputable cleaner will hand-wash your rug using a pH-neutral detergent.

      MOLD & MILDREW PREVENTION

Moisture can pose a risk of mold and mildew on rugs. In the event of spills, it's crucial to ensure that the rug dries thoroughly. If a spill occurs, consider lifting the affected area off the pad to facilitate air circulation, aiding in the dissipation of moisture.

Plants can also contribute to moisture-related issues. Avoid placing potted plants directly on the area rug, even if there is a saucer. The persistent moisture from the plant can lead to rot, causing potential damage to the rug. Exercise caution to maintain the optimal condition of your rug and prevent the development of mold and mildew.

        ROTATING YOUR RUG

All rugs will fade somewhat over time. It is recommended that your rug be rotated annually. This will help prevent obvious wear patterns and fading.

         SHEDDING & SHADING

LONG TUFTS: If you find a stray tuft protruding from the surface of your carpet, do not pull it out. Instead, cut it with scissors to the level of the surrounding pile.

SHEDDING:  With a new carpet, short pieces of fibre will work loose from the pile during the first few months. This is to be expected and does not mean that there is a defect. The amount of fibre lost represents a very small fraction of the whole carpet.

SHADING: Light and dark patches often appear on a cut-pile carpet shortly after it has been laid. This shading is usually most noticeable on plain velvet carpet. It is not a sign of wear, but simply the result of the new tufts being trodden down in varying directions.
